PreSonus Streams NAMM Show to the World

... At this year's Winter NAMM Convention the PreSonus booth was a non-stop nexus of activity, with live performances, technology demonstrations, showcases, and more. But perhaps the biggest buzz was one most attendees were barely aware of. In a tiny 12 x 6 foot room behind the stage, PreSonus staffers were busy streaming the entire show out to the world.

Winter NAMM is one of the world's largest and most exciting events for musical instruments and music technology. But while tens of thousands of industry visitors from all corners of the globe converge on the Anaheim Convention Center every year, members of the general public have rarely had an opportunity to get inside the show - until now.

Multiple video feeds, including PTZ camera on the performers and an oversize screen behind the stage, were fed to a Black Magic switcher in the editing suite, where Video Designer / Producer Paul Charbonnet cranked some serious performance out of three computers at once. "The Black Magic system is mixing directly to a Mac Pro, which gives us our primary program," Charbonnet explains. "Then we've got an iMac and MacBook Pro doing multiple duties including rendering, encoding for the Web, capturing for our YouTube and Vimeo channels, monitoring live chat, and more."

"We've got a multitrack audio split feed coming from the stage into our StudioLive 24.4.2 console," explains Audio Engineer Mat Criddle. "That enables us to deliver separate, simultaneous mixes for FOH and Webcasting." Criddle also provided monitor mixes back to the performers, who were able to manipulate their mixes using their iPhones via PreSonus' new QMix™ wireless technology.

"At the same time, we're also recording a multitrack feed of the live performances directly into StudioOne," says Criddle. "So any of our performing artists can take their tracks and do a full mix later on, and create a live recording or music video from their performance here at NAMM."

In addition to the performance camera feeds, Associated Creative Director Cave Daughdrill and Social Media Manager Ryan Roullard were regularly roaming the show floor, camera and wireless mic in hand, conducting interviews with other exhibitors, attendees, and anyone else who might have something interesting to show, say, or play. "In between performances, we're mixing in a bit of Cave and Ryan's feed, along with a range of product demos and other content," says Charbonnet.

Besides roaming the show, Roullard was a full-time presence on the web, blasting out photos and posts to Facebook and Twitter, fielding questions and comments from viewers, and monitoring the Web for relevant info.

And the action didn't stop after the show closed. At 6PM, the day's content was uploaded to PreSonus' LiveStream channel, where viewers from time zones in Europe, Asia, and elsewhere could get a peek. "Over the first two days of the show alone, we edited and uploaded more than 32 videos," says Charbonnet.

Despite the daunting demands of bringing NAMM to the world, Charbonnet reports that both men and machinery held up to the job. "It was a non-stop gig, but we were pleased to see that everything went off without a hitch," he says. "It was a real team effort, and we had tons of support from everyone. In the end, it was a great feeling to know we were doing something great for music fans everywhere, and making history at the same time."

Beverly Hills Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. Davis B. Nguyen, who has set a tradition of hosting his annual holiday party to benefit a charity, sponsored the gala event. Renowned for his  transformative makeovers on humans, Dr. Nguyen has a passion for helping animals; The generous plastic surgeon also contributed a cosmetic makeover to anyone contributing $1000 or more and that garnered $16,000.00 alone.

The red-carpet event was held at the Peninsula Hotel where celebrities Jillian Michaels, Michael Weatherly ("NCIS"), Reality Star Peggy Tanous ("The Real Housewives of Orange County"), Actor Robert Wahl (Arli$$),  Award-winning composer Diane Warren, "Dancing with the Stars" contestant and supermodel Joanna Krupa, Jayde Nicole (TV personality, PMOY 2008), Valerie Fitzgerald (Host of HGTV's "Selling LA"), and actress and animal activist Katie Cleary ("Deal or No Deal") walked the red carpet.

More than 300 guests gathered to support Much Love Animal Rescue and enjoy vegetarian hor's d'oeuvres, live music along with a silent auction which included signed items by Ryan Gosling, Rhianna and Jane Lynch, as well as tickets to Jerry Seinfeld's live show donated by Carol Leifer.

An estimated $30,000 was raised via donations, raffles and silent auctions. "The event exceeded our expectations," says Stacy Bodell of Much Love Animal Rescue. We are grateful to Dr. Nguyen for his generous support and for hosting this incredible fundraiser that helped us to raise much needed funds to benefit Much Love Animal Rescue. The money we raised last night will go a long way to furthering our efforts in rescuing shelter animals and saving their lives and help us to find them  loving homes."

“Mr. Mojo Risin’: The Story of L.A. Woman” is told through new interviews with band members MANZAREK, KRIEGER and DENSMORE as well as Elektra Records founder JAC HOLZMAN, original manager Bill Siddons, engineer/co-producer Bruce Botnick and others. The high-definition video also features live and studio performances as well as rare archival photos. This fascinating documentary contains rare footage of The Doors in the studio and onstage. The documentary was made with the full involvement, approval and cooperation of The Doors.

The group’s final album -- 1971’s L.A. WOMAN, with the signature hits “L.A. Woman,” “Love Her Madly” and “Riders On The Storm” -- is being celebrated with a special anniversary two-CD release from Rhino and a behind-the-scenes DVD/Blu-ray from Eagle Rock Entertainment.

In addition to the newly discovered song “She Smells So Nice,” the second disc of the L.A. WOMAN reissue includes eight never-before-heard versions of songs from the album. Alternate takes of “L.A. Woman,” “Love Her Madly” and “Riders On The Storm” offer a fresh view on this landmark album, which was the group’s sixth straight Top 10. The studio chatter between the songs is a revelation, transporting listeners to The Doors Workshop: the West Hollywood rehearsal space where they recorded the album with Botnick. One segment in particular captures a fascinating moment of inspiration when Morrison suggests they add the now-iconic thunderstorm sound effects to the beginning of “Riders On The Storm.”

L.A. WOMAN marked THE DOORS’ swan song, as Morrison would pass away a few months after its release. At the time, Rolling Stone’s Robert Meltzer called it “The Doors’ greatest album…A landmark worthy of dancing in the streets (5/27/71).” The first band to release eight consecutive platinum albums, THE DOORS were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2007.

Why the big buildup, you ask? Because that's the day when the iconic rock band

will officially debut their first new, completely unreleased song in 40 years!

The song is called “SHE SMELLS SO NICE.” The bluesy track captures the complete original band -- organist RAY MANZAREK, guitarist ROBBY KRIEGER, drummer JOHN DENSMORE and late singer JIM MORRISON -- joyfully barreling through the full-throttle original tune. Below is information regarding two very special ladies: Ashley Oelsen and Lesley Brog, who do incredible work with animals. They also encourage others to take action in their hometown when it comes to rescuing animals, and understanding the bond between humans and dogs. As the holidays approach, many animal lovers give pets as gifts, so it's the perfect time to make sure you're providing a happy home for everyone.

Meet Ashley Oelsen (Sol Foundation), and Lesley Brog (Wags & Walks) who, together, have embarked on a journey to help save millions of rescue dogs by building awareness through education and community outreach. Each inspired by their love for animals, Ashley and Lesley, through their respective foundations, bring something unique and diverse to their day-to-day operations.

“Saving one dog won’t change the world, but it will change the world for that one dog.” That’s Wags and Walks Rescue’s favorite quote and they never lose sight of it! Founded by Lesley Brog in 2010, Wags and Walks launched because Lesley knew she wanted to do more for animals. As the daughter of a vet and a volunteer at various dog rescues, Lesley learned the harsh reality that amazing, well behaved, beautiful “pets” were being dumped at local shelters. A devastating number, 5000 dogs, are euthanized every day in shelters due to lack of funds and space. Wags and Walks dedicates their time to physically visiting shelters, sometimes hours away. They take pictures, get to know the dog’s temperament, work with staff, network the dogs that are the most in danger and put a plan in place to avoid having to put them to sleep.

“I don’t just talk the talk,” says Lesley. “I am a take action kind of girl! I am also proud to teach my little girls empathy, compassion and kindness to animals first hand. This is what every mother wants to teach her children.”

Sol Foundation (Sharing Our Love), named after her rescue dog Sol, was founded by Ashley Oelsen in 2008 and is one of the most unique foundations uniting rescue dogs and children. The bond between humans and animals can be so strong not to mention life changing for both. Ashley created Sol Foundation to do just this and more. Her mission is to prevent cruelty to animals through education, awareness and advocacy. She created a very distinctive way to teach kids an established sense of responsibility, and kindness towards animals and other humans that begins with weekly visits, with Sol by her side, to local schools and community centers helping students in the curriculum of reading and writing. In addition to the basic stepping-stones of education that will hopefully lead to the success of future generations, Ashley and Sol commence that initial connection between kids and animals. Unfortunate but factual, many of these kids and rescues share similar backgrounds such as physical abuse, abandonment and lack of attention. Aside from the tutorial benefits that Ashley brings to the table, these students are able to bond with the animals, respect them and learn that with hard work and responsibility they can find unconditional love in one another, something they may have never experienced.

Ashley travels as far as Canada to get many of her rescues to their new home.

Ashley Oelsen and Lesley Brog are true heroes. They’re passionate and determined, and their mission to save homeless pets and unite them with loving owners will never end. They have made a commitment for life.

McCartney Announces Ocean’s Kingdom, his first orchestral score for dance released October 4

Marking his first foray into the world of dance, Paul McCartney has announced the general release of Ocean’s Kingdom, commissioned by the New York City Ballet. The recording will be released by Hear Music/Telarc and is conducted by John Wilson, produced by John Fraser and performed by The London Classical Orchestra.

Ocean’s Kingdom is the first time Paul has written an original orchestral score or any kind of music for dance and is the result of a collaboration between Paul and New York City Ballet’s Master in Chief Peter Martins, who have worked together to present the world premiere of a new ballet for the company’s 2011/2012 season this September.

Though the work is Paul’s first ballet, he approached the project in the same way he writes all other music, driven by his heart rather than his head and inspired by feeling rather than specific technical knowledge. While this may have been another new turn for his staggeringly varied career to take, Paul knew it had to be influenced by his own personal experience and that he needed to create a story the audience would find equally compelling and moving.

Paul’s first step was to visit the Royal Opera House to see Adolphe Adam’s Giselle, danced by the Royal Ballet. Afterwards, Paul met the dancers and discussed the work with them, realising as he did so that he was still without a central theme to his work. Keen to tell a story through his music, Paul decided to focus on the purity of the ocean and within just two months, the first draft had been completed. He then went through the music again thinking specifically of the ballet itself, thereby creating a world featuring distinctive characters and a vibrant underworld kingdom. Finally Paul spent many more weeks working alongside Peter Martins to refine the work, before Peter created the choreography with the NYCB dancers.

An hour long score featuring four stunning movements – “Ocean’s Kingdom,” “Hall of Dance,” “Imprisonment” and “Moonrise” – the ballet tells of a love story within the story of an underwater world whose people are threatened by the humans of Earth. A potently expressive and richly varied work, the score is Paul’s most challenging and emotionally complex yet. As he explains: “What was interesting was writing music that meant something expressively rather than just writing a song. Trying to write something that expressed an emotion – so you have fear, love, anger, sadness to play with and I found that exciting and challenging.”

The premiere of the ballet Ocean’s Kingdom will take place at NYCB’s Fall Gala on Thursday 22^nd September 2011 while the release of the orchestral score will follow on October 4^th, available digitally, on CD and on vinyl. It was recorded in June in London.

The artwork that accompanies the release is equally striking and inventive. Though it seems to suggest a city skyline, it is actually a digital readout of the notes from the ballet score.

Although this is his first orchestral score for dance, Paul is already quite at home in the world of classical music. His back catalogue already carries four classical albums, the most recent of which was the Classical BRIT Award winning ‘Ecce Cor Meum (Behold My Heart)’; a work for chorus and orchestra in four movements that was released in 2006.

Tech Thoughts by Don Rose

Well, a lot of words went by today, from Apple CEO Tim Cook and a cast of other players, and here are the main highlights, as I see it.

First, the iPhone. As usual, this was what the attendees in Cupertino were salivating for, the meat of the presentation - perhaps a bit leaner meat than in the recent past, but the upshot is this new pricing structure:

iPhone 4s (new generation): 16 GB, $199 ; 32 GB, $299 ; 64 GB, $399.
iPhone 4 (old 2010 model): 8 GB, $99.

iPhone 3Gs (old old model, gen -2): 8 GB, FREE!

The above pricing assumes 2 year contract, natch.

Among other improvements, the new iPhone 4s sports a faster dual-core A5 chip, with up to 7 times faster graphics, and features a cool new assistant named Siri, who I will get to in a minute.

Other news: Sprint is finally getting in on the action; the nation's third largest cell provider will offer the iPhone to its customers for the first time, something widely rumored - but still no Tmo. The "Joy iPhone Club" is now up to 3: AT&T, Verizon and Sprint.

Meanwhile, iCloud and iOS 5 officially have a date. Don't get excited, it's not love, just a drop date. iOS 5, the next generation of the operating system powering Apple's mobile must-haves (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch), will be a free update available October 12 for download. Apple promises over 200 new features. iCloud will be available the same day.

CARDS is a new free Apple app that lets you create and send cards (real not virtual) right from the palm of your hand. Yep, snap a photo and create a beautiful letterpress card, then mail it anywhere from your iPhone or iPod touch. The cost: $2.99 for mailing that card anywhere in the USA, $4.99 to the rest of the world. Not a bad deal when you consider it includes the card, the envelope, the postage, the effort of delivering the card, and a push notification on your phone to tell you when the card is delivered! Expect this to be a huge holiday helper (hell yeah!).

SIRI voice control for the iPhone was arguably the biggest announcement today. Siri is a new virtual assistant you talk to, enabling you to do a ton of tasks via your iPhone, using voice dialogue. Set up appointments, convert currency, search websites, dictate email and more — just by talking to your phone. Fast, easy. Kinda like dealing with a female HAL 9000, but thankfully much much smaller (and, I assume, more benevolent). The voice itself is not perfect, but does sound decent enough to not get annoyed.

These are just a few highlights from today's announcements, but perhaps the most interesting Apple after-effect was the emotional reaction when it ended. Several tech pundits put down today's event as less than stellar, less than groundbreaking, and perhaps it was a bit of a letdown after so many home runs in a row. For example, many people expected an iPhone 5 along with the 4s we got, which led to disappointment among some. But perhaps the prevalent putdowning of the presentation is more a testament to the 800 pound gorilla who was not in the room. This was, after all, the first Apple announcement in a long long time without Steve Jobs at the helm, and it showed. Perhaps the "reality distortion field" was gone. Perhaps new CEO Cook just doesn't have the charm and charisma of Jobs.

But let's get real, folks: the new iPhone 4s will sell millions of units, the 4s is the best iPhone ever made (maybe not a quantum leap beyond last year's model, but still a leap), and the iPhone 5 will eventually come. We just come to expect so much from Apple that, when they deliver an A instead of an A+, everyone cries failure. If only we all could fail so successfully.

SINGAFEST Film Festival 2011: Saturday Event Report

The first SINGAFEST featured a full Saturday of films (at Westwood's Crest Theatre), panels (at Westwood's stellar eatery Napa Valley Grille) and a fun festive late night party (again at the NVG). The day began with a shorts program, followed by the well attended afternoon luncheon, featuring two panels focusing on the current state of the Asian film industry.

Professional panelists, post-panel, pose patiently.

Then came 3 more films, the closer being 1981's "Samurai Reincarnation" (aren't you just dying to say Samurai Resurrection? sounds much better), starring Sonny Chiba, owner of the sternest face I have ever seen onscreen. I loved the surprises after the film. After a short martial arts demonstration, the audience enjoyed a brief DVD screening featuring Sonny and his daughter fighting in a remarkably well done short, which almost felt like a mini sequel to the film just screened. Sonny himself then took to the mic, live at the theater, to thank the audience, acknowledge his recent celebration of FIFTY years in showbiz, and promise more films in the future.

Singafest will serve as an international platform to celebrate Asian culture, showcasing the works of established and up-and-coming Asian and Asian-American filmmakers.

(Hollywood, CA, Sept. 15, 2011) – Neil Patrick Harris, co-star of “How I Met Your Mother” was honored today by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce with his first star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The ceremony was held in celebration of the upcoming DVD release of HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER Season 6: The New is Always Better Edition on September 27.

Equally successful on stage and screen, Neil Patrick Harris continues to demonstrate his creative versatility. He can currently be seen as the womanizing Barney Stinson on the hit CBS comedy series, “How I Met Your Mother,” a role which has garnered him four Emmy Award nominations, two Golden Globe nominations, a People’s Choice Award for Favorite TV Comedy Actor, and a Critics’ Choice Award for Supporting Actor in a Comedy.

In 2010, Neil won his first two Emmy Awards for his guest-starring turn on the critically-acclaimed series, "Glee," and his role as host of the 63rd Annual Tony Awards. In addition to hosting the 2009 Tony Awards, Harris also served as host and producer of both the 65th Annual Tony Awards and the 61stAnnual Primetime Emmys. Named one of the “2008 Entertainers of the Year” by Entertainment Weekly, Neil was included in Time Magazine's 2010 Time 100 List, an annual list of the world's leading thinkers, leaders, artists, and heroes.

Harris gained notoriety on the small screen as the much-adored title character in “Doogie Howser, M.D.,” a role which also garnered him a Golden Globe nomination. Harris’ additional television credits include the NBC comedy series, Stark Raving Mad, Joan of Arc, Showtime’s The Man in the Attic, the classic TNT telefilm Cold Sassy Tree opposite Faye Dunaway, My Antonia with Jason Robards and Eva Marie Saint, The Wedding Dress with Tyne Daly, and CBS’s top-rated telefilm of 2005 The Christmas Blessing. Neil has also made notable guest appearances on such shows as "Glee," "Will & Grace," "Ed," "Sesame Street" and "Boomtown."

It came from the halls of IBM
with floppy drive, CRT,
and an OS named DOS from Microsoft
run by a kid named Bill G.

The first killer app was VisiCalc
A spreadsheet that blew all our minds
Because it would update and crunch in real time
And show patterns mortal minds couldn't find.

TIME Magazine named it "Machine Of The Year"
Which sure shocked a lot of old folks
Who thought only humans could get that award
While cynics just thought it was a joke.

Sure, there were tough times, when I hated PC
and wanted to toss it on the street
It made me scream and turn blue with its Blue Screen of Death

Tech News Today (http://live.twit.tv) reported that a certain domain name - socl.com - was generating much buzz, as it apparently belonged to Microsoft and (accidentally?) revealed the existence of a new social network/service/thing called Tulalip.

Upon visiting www.socl.com at 854pm today, there was nothing on that site except for the following message:

Thanks for stopping by.

Socl.com is an internal design project from a team in Microsoft Research which was mistakenly published to the web.

We didn’t mean to, honest.

So, fellow webheads, what do you think? Was it a leak meant to generate word of mouth? Or a bona fide "oops" moment?

I am leaning towards the latter.

And what do you think Microsoft Research is up to? Since Microsoft already owns a percentage of Facebook, and is partnering in several ways, it seems doubtful they would be trying to compete and create an alternative to Facebook. One idea: perhaps Microsoft wants to create a streamlined or lite version of Facebook that makes it easier to use, with less distractions for newbies and business folk (like all those game requests you don't want, from people you don't know that well). I like that Facebook offers lots of options and things to do, but a simpler version would appeal to a wide audience, especially on a mobile device. (So maybe Tulalip is a code name for a Windows Phone frontend for Facebook?)

Oh, and in case you were wondering (as I was) what Tulalip means, here is what I found (via Wikipedia):

Guitar Center’s RockWalk is dedicated to honoring those artists who have made a significant impact and lasting contribution to the growth and evolution of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Blues and R&B. JANE’S ADDICTION’s handprints will reside alongside the handprints, signatures, and faces of other accomplished musicians and innovators including Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Elvis Presley, Carlos Santana, Johnny Cash, Van Halen, AC/DC, Bonnie Raitt, Aerosmith, Carl Perkins, Marvin Gaye, James Brown, B.B. King, Stevie Wonder, Run-D.M.C and Queen, among numerous others.

At the event, it was revealed that JANE’S ADDICTION is the newest artist to be featured as part of the innovative “Guitar Center On-Stage” program, which offers one unsigned artist or band the career-altering chance to open for one of the world’s greatest rock bands. The winner of “Guitar Center On-Stage: Jane’s Addiction” will open for the band as part of their summer album launch tour. In addition to the opening slot, the winner will also receive $20,000 in new gear from Gibson and Epiphone, a $10,000 Guitar Center shopping spree and a mentoring session from Prospect Park management. “Guitar Center On-Stage: Jane’s Addiction” is the third installment of the innovative program. Previous editions of “Guitar Center On-Stage” featured Motley Crue and KISS.

Meanwhile, JANE’S ADDICTION rocked the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) this past Saturday night (May 28) when they performed at a party in honor of Tim Burton for the opening of “Tim Burton,” a 700-work retrospective of the esteemed director’s career. (JANE’S ADDICTION, big fans of Burton, asked if they could play in his honor when they heard about the event, and he loved the idea.)

Firing up their pre-single teaser song “End To The Lies” as well as their classics “Mountain Song,” “Ted Just Admit It,” “Jane Says” and (at Burton’s request) “Stop,” the band—Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro, Stephen Perkins and Chris Chaney—played outdoors in the LACMA plaza, in front of a mural that was a set piece from the Burton film Ed Wood and Farrell performed in the Mad Hatter costume that Johnny Depp wore in another Burton film Alice In Wonderland. Watching the packed show near the front of the stage was Burton, whom the band brought up at the end to toast his special night in front of some 700 attendees including actors from Burton films.

PITCHfest Contest
DFG's second annual PITCHfest Contest is designed to provide attendees with rare exposure to new, innovative, online business, service or technology ideas.

"PITCHfest was a big hit last year and revealed some very smart ideas," said

"This year we're extending the boundaries of the contest to allow any new, innovative online business, service or technology ideas to be presented. Some important changes have been made to this year's contest. First, presentations are not limited to business models designed to improve revenue on parked domains. Second, instead of allowing judges to ask contestants a range of questions after each five-minute presentation, the judges will remain silent and the next contestant will be immediately ushered onto the stage. This will ensure that the quality and clarity of the five minutes on stage is maximized, exposing the audience to as many innovative ideas as possible.

The judges will rate each presentation in four dimensions: Creativity, Viability, Originality and Revenue Potential. Their combined score will determine the winner. The winner will receive a DOMAINfest Global 2010 PITCHfest Innovator Trophy and be featured in a press release. The audience will also be allowed to vote for the People's Choice winner, using a real-time text message voting system. The People's Choice winner will receive a People's Choice trophy and be featured in a press release. The preliminary list of judges (which is subject to change) includes:

Scott Jarus

John M. Morris
is Chairman Emeritus of the Tech Coast Angels and an experienced venture capitalist and angel investor, helping entrepreneurs build successful businesses. He serves as Vistage Chair for Vistage International. Previously, Morris was a partner in an expansion stage venture capital firm that worked with emerging technology companies.

Fantasy Domaining Contest
The Fantasy Domaining Contest roughly resembles Fantasy Football in terms of its format and rules. Contestants "draft" their initial roster from a master list of 1,000 domains, put some in-play, substitute domains in-play, and trade domains with other contestants. The contest is designed to be fun and provides a way for beginners and experts alike to test their skills and intuition in projecting the PPC revenue of domain names.

Signing up for the contest is free. Only one entry per person is allowed. The winner will receive a trip to DFG 2011 that includes a travel stipend of $1,000, four nights at the hotel plus free admission to DFG. The winner will also receive a "Fantasy Domaining Champion" trophy on stage at DOMAINfest Global 2011, and all bragging rights that go with it.

Second place receives a free DFG 2011 conference ticket and third place receives 50% off a DOMAINfest Global 2011 ticket. Winners will be notified on January 17, 2011. TO EXPERIENCE THE COMPLEX AND RICH TRADITION OF MANDALA

The Mandala Project: October 25 – November 7, 2010 (First Public Event on October 26)

The Hammer Museum in Westwood Village, in partnership with Ari Bhöd — the American

Foundation for Tibetan Cultural Preservation — is pleased to present The Mandala Project. This two-

week program will feature the construction of a Tibetan sand mandala by a team of traditionally

trained Lamas visiting Los Angeles from the Thubten Choeling Monastery in Pharping, Nepal. The

mandala they create will be a sacred painting, following precise and ancient instructions passed

down over thousands of years. Millions of grains of colored sand will be sprinkled carefully on a flat

surface over an elaborate 10-day ceremony.
The mandala painting represents boundless compassion, purity and clarity. It is believed that

mandalas have the power to transform negativity and awaken altruism and compassion in the viewer.

Accompanying the sand mandala will be a series of architectural drawings of a proposed four story

mandala for Ari Bhöd by Los Angeles based architect Michael Rotondi, as well as a smaller three-

dimensional mandala, created by Pema Namdol Thaye, a master of Tibetan art. The project also

includes a Hammer Conversation with Rotondi and Thaye, and culminates in a ceremonial sweeping

of the sand and a concluding procession to the Pacific Ocean for the dispersal of the sand on

November 7, 2010.
The mandala is a profound, universal symbol that translates literally to “center and its surroundings”

and is a physical representation of our interdependence, or the notion that everything and everyone

is interlinked. Mandalas are found in many forms, but always include a circle, a central point, and

some form of symmetry. They can be created in sand, on paper or cloth, or built as 3-dimensional

models or buildings. The vivid painted mandalas of Tibet are the most widely known. There are only

a few three-dimensional mandalas in the world, due in part to the large commitment of time and

expertise needed to create them.
Traditionally created as a tool for visualization and meditation, every single detail of a mandala—

the design, the colors, and placement of symbols—is deliberate. The blueprints are considered

sacred, with many layers of deep meaning and positive representation. Before beginning, traditional

mandala artists generate the intention to benefit others and the motivation of compassion, which is

believed to infuse the art or structure with unique spiritual and sacred qualities.

Venerable Gelong Kalsang Rinpoche – Former Vajra Master of Rigdzin Drub-Pai Ghatsal, the retreat

center of His Holiness Chatral Rinpoche in Nepal, Gelong Rinpoche will be leading the traditional

ceremonies and creation of the sand mandala.
Venerable Lama Ngawang Thogmed – A master of ritual arts and a master mandala artist, Ven.

Lama Thogme is often sought out to train many of the monks of the Nyingma and Kagyu lineages at

monasteries throughout India and Nepal in the complex art of sand mandala making.

Lama Nawang Sampten Lhundrup – Master temple craftsman and ritual artist.

Lama Rinji Sherpa Tsewang – Assistant mandala artist.

Architect and educator Michael Rotondi is the principal of RoTo Architecture, an award-winning firm

that creates unconventional structures that aim to dissolve the boundaries between design, science,

technology, and the fine arts. Rotondi co-founded Morphosis in 1972 and was director of the

Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc). A master of Tibetan art, Pema Namdol Thaye

is renowned for his expertise in traditional Tibetan thangka painting, sculpture and the creation of

rare three dimensional mandalas. For more the 25 years, Pema has provided a vital contribution to

the world’s understanding of traditional Tibetan Art. All Hammer public programs are free.

Dissolution Ceremony & Procession to Pacific Ocean
The monks will perform a dissolution ceremony at 3pm, and at 3:30pm they will lead a procession to

the ocean. All are welcome to join the dissolution ceremony and procession, but you will need your

own transportation. Driving directions will be provided at the ceremony.

Ari Bhöd was founded by Venerable Lama Chödak Gyatso Nubpa to preserve the ancient Nyingma wisdom

tradition of Tibet. The Nyingma tradition, known as the Ancient Onis the original tradition developed in Tibet

by the great spiritual adept Padmasambhava in the ninth century. These teachings were preserved in Tibet in

an unbroken transmission for more than one thousand years. Its benefits have stood the test of time, the

methods proven effective in bringing forth positive qualities, especially altruism and compassion. It is our

The Beatles' original greatest hits packages, first released in 2 vinyl volumes back in 1973, are back!

Fans informally refer to them as the Red and Blue albums, due to their original covers' colors.

Each set includes 2 CDs as well as new photos and liner notes. The 1962-66 set (Red) and 67-70 (Blue) have both been remastered, and are available in stores as well as online beginning October 19. (I checked Best Buy today in Westwood and their price -- $13.99 per double-CD set -- seems to match Amazon's.)
Thought for Today: If you include the band's "White Album", today's releases mean you can finally have the all-British Beatles in All-American Red, White and Blue.

The Bel Air Film Festival is back. The third edition of this annual fest takes place at the UCLA James Bridges Theatre (inside Melnitz Hall).
BAFF will run October 14-19, 2010.

The BAFF opening night on October 14 is jam-packed, featuring 3 films, several honors and a reception. The 2010 Bel-Air Film Festival (BAFF) will host its third annual event October 14th-19th with screenings held at the UCLA James Bridges Theater. 58 films will be presented including 35 world premieres and 12 Los Angeles premieres.

The festival will recognize and honor Brian Austin Green with the festival’s Best Actor Award, Kathy Najimy and Mark Rydell with the Legendary Filmmaker Awards, and Salaam Remi for Best Music in Film.

The ceremony will screen Walk a Mile in My Pradas, a film by the festival’s headline sponsor Dream It Productions. This “Work in Progress” feature film starring Nathaniel Marston, Tom Arnold, and Tom Archdeacon, tells a timely story about relevant issues such as Prop 8 and gay rights. With Christmas in Los Angeles as its backdrop, Writer/Producer, Rick (Sudi) Karatas creates a fantastical world where a little Christmas magic causes two coworkers to switch sexual orientations. The film offers messages of tolerance and acceptance, in a light and heart warming, comedic fashion and marks director Joey Sylvester’s feature debut.

In its Los Angeles Premiere the short film Turning Japanese, starring Brian Austin Green, will be screened. Turning Japanese tells the story of a couple struggling with their finances that stumble upon an unknowing sleepwalker and exploit her nightly episodes by selling tickets. Brian Austin Green is well known from his role on the hit TV series 90210 as well as his performances in the sitcom Freddie, the films Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Domino and recurring roles on the TV series Smallville and Desperate Housewives.

Kathy Najimy will introduce the Los Angeles premiere of the documentary The Last Elephants in Thailand and bring attention to a cause she personally supports: the fight to save the dwindling population of elephants in Thailand and expose the abuse of elephants in amusement parks and the way elephants are forced to paint. Named Ms. Magazine’s “Woman of the Year” in 2005 and known as the voice of Peggy Hill on 14 seasons of the animated series King of the Hill, she is also easily recognized for her roles in the films Sister Act I and Sister Act II, the animated film Wall-E and over 20 feature films including Hocus Pocus, Rat Race and The Wedding Planner. An active philanthropist, she has been recognized frequently for over 20 years of charitable efforts.

Mark Rydell will receive the Legendary Filmmaker Award, presented by Katharine Kramer. Rydell’s recent projects includes work with Forest Whitaker, Danny DeVito, and Kim Basinger in the upcoming film, “Even Money,” and the film, “Hollywood Ending,” starring Woody Allen. Rydell was also director of the TV bio-pic James Dean which earned actor James Franco a Golden Globe award. Rydell also acted in the movie, playing Jack Wagner. Mr. Rydell is a member of the board of directors at the Katherine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center.

Salaam Remi is being recognized by BAFF for Best Music in Film. He has produced for Nas, The Fugees, Amy Winehouse, Alicia Keys and Ricky Martin among others and is responsible for the sounds of Sex and the City and Rush Hour 3. A favorite of directors Brett Ratner and Michael Patrick King, Remi is one of the most sought after producers in Hollywood. He recently finished scoring an upcoming documentary on Mike Tyson.

Back to Back To The Future: AMC Brings Classic Film Back to Theaters Oct 23 & 25; Blu-ray Trilogy Due Oct 26

We previously reported on the 25th anniversary of Val Kilmer's first starring vehicle, the sci-fi comedy "Real Genius". As far as we know, there was no big celebration to commemorate the occasion, but fortunately for lovers of comedy science fiction, such is not the case for "Back to the Future" and its 25th anniversary! BttF is being re-released in theaters October 23rd and October 25th in over 40 U.S. cities, apparently for those two nights only. Those
who attend the special screenings are promised a poster commemorating the 25th anniversary of the movie (until they run out, of course, so get there early, kids). We also learned that theaters will have "special movie-related giveaways".

The print to be shown in theaters is a digital re-master, in advance of the upcoming release of "Back to the Future" on Blu-ray, which should look fantastic (or, as Marty might say, "heavy"). The hi-def Blu-ray and regular DVD release (set for October 26) is a trilogy box set that will include the two BttF sequels and many bonus features.

We hope to see you at the screenings. If you can't jot down the info right now, just remember: "25 Oct, Doc!" or "25th party on the 25th, Marty!" (Okay, AMC isn't promising a real party-party with your ticket price, but close enough - heck, if you bring your pals, it will be a party!)
