The IPA previously announced the addition of the Moving Image Photographer of the Year award. Professional, emerging, and student photographers will be eligible to submit cohesive moving image pieces including short films, music videos, and slideshows. The winner, selected from the professional and emerging entrants, will receive a $2500 cash prize.
Gerd Ludwig, 2006 winner of the IPA Photographer of the Year award was quoted as saying, "The Lucies are not to be missed. It is an event reflective of all the Lucie Foundation stands for – invigorated with a bit of the glamour that eludes many photographers in the field year round."
The IPA will give $22,500 in cash prizes to winners of its annual competition including $10,000 for the International Photographer of the Year Award provided by AtEdge, $5,000 prize for the Discovery of the Year Award provided by ASMP, and $5,000 to the Deeper Perspective Photographer of the Year in addition to the new Moving Image Photographer of the Year $2,500 award. The IPA has awarded close to $200,000 in prize money over the last 9 years. Winning work will also be displayed in the annual Best of Show exhibition, during Lucie Week.
Also announced is the introduction of a long anticipated biannual Lucie Magazine, a journal of contemporary photography which highlights the 2012 Lucie Awards celebration – including the top finalists from the IPA competition as well as this year’s honorees. It will be distributed free of charge through galleries, studios, labs, advertising agencies and the like. The Spring Issue will debut in April during MOPLA (Month of Photography LA) in 2013.
The Lucie Awards are the culmination of a weekend of events leading up to the big night including the IPA’s Best of Show exhibition and party, the debut of the 10 Years of Lucie Masters Exhibition showcasing a group show of Lucie Honorees, in addition to the a day of lectures and education. The Lucie Awards, produced by the Lucie Foundation, (a non-profit charitable foundation), honor the achievements of the world’s most accomplished photographers, discover and cultivate emerging talent through mentoring and scholarship programs, and promote the appreciation of photography worldwide.
“We are so excited to be returning to the same venue where it all began 10 years ago. This year’s honorees highlight how far The Lucies have come in such a short yet historic time. With the introduction of the new IPA Moving Image category and the publication of the first Lucie magazine, we mark a very special milestone,” stated Hossein Farmani, founder of The Lucie Awards.
Cat Jimenez, Executive Director of the Lucie Foundation, remarked, “I am so proud that the dream of The Lucie Awards has inspired the growth of the Foundation to include the year-round programming that began in 2009. It has been such a fruitful first 10 years. The return to The Lucies’ birth city, Los Angeles, for the 10 year anniversary is particularly apropos.”
About the Lucie Foundation
The Lucie Foundation's mission is to honor master photographers, discover and cultivate emerging talent and promote photography appreciation worldwide. The Lucie Awards ceremony is held annually to celebrate the outstanding achievements of the international photography community, recognizing those whose life's work deserves the highest acclaim. This is also where the Foundation's sister enterprise, the International Photography Awards (IPA) competition, announces the winners of the Photographer of the Year, the Discovery of the Year, the Deeper Perspective Photographer of the Year, and the Moving Image Photographer of the Year awards. Cash prizes and statues are awarded. The Foundation presents year-round programming to support at-risk youth through SNAPSHOP!, and emerging photographers through E-pprentice, an online mentoring program. The Foundation also offers financial funding through the Lucie Scholarship Programs in support of both emerging and professional photographers. MOPLA (Month of Photography LA), which is entering its fifth year in 2013, has become the west coast destination for a unique month of distinctive programming for photographers and those who appreciate the craft. The Lucie Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit charitable foundation. www.luciefoundation.org
