Los Angeles, CA -- 25 years ago the mega hit “WE ARE THE WORLD” was recorded. TV & Radio personality Sonny Melendrez had a dream of children singing that song. That dream gave Sonny the vision of having kids from around the world record it to help Africa. Sonny enlisted the talents of Roger Neal to help produce the kids version of “We Are The World” known as “THE CHILDREN OF THE WORLD” PROJECT.

They enlisted George Duke to produce this special kids version of “We Are The World” which would later be nominated in the kids category for a Grammy Award. George not only produced the song but played on the music track while enlisting the support of Steve Smith (Journey), Sheila E, and Philip Bailey (Earth, Wind and Fire). This massive endeavor took over 3 months. The special recording was done with 50 kids, including child stars and children of all ethnicities. Many of the kid stars became adult superstars like: Drew Barrymore, Alyssa Milano, Fergie, Kim Fields, Danny Pintauro, Glenn Scarapelli and Alphonso Riberio, to name a few. In addition, some have become Tony Award winning Broadway stars.

Last week, when it was announced that Lionel Ritchie would produce a new version of “WE ARE THE WORLD” for Haiti, Sonny Melendrez’s phone and email started lighting up. He quickly called Roger Neal and they sprang into action. Feeling inspired to help children who are victims of the Haiti Earthquake, they have announced the 25th Anniversary Collectors Edition box set of “The Children Of The World”.

The Children Of The World Anniversary Collectors Edition box set will include the original recording of The Children Of The World “We Are The World” song from 25 years ago. The Children Of The World “We Are The World” music video has never been available to the public to own until now. Also: a CBS radio special (Original recording as the song premiered), Never before seen photos (From the day of actual recording 25 years ago), Hours of bonus video (Never before seen footage of the recording session ), Reunion footage of some of the 50 Children Of The World kids with current interviews about their memories in a Where Are They Now feature, Bonus collectors 45 record of the original recording, Current celebrities on what the WE ARE THE WORLD song means to them and how it has impacted their lives.

Director Eric Hansen of BLUE STAR DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES Inc. has partnered with Sonny Melendrez and Roger Neal to co-exec-produce the Anniversary Collectors Edition box set. The box set will include: Blu-Ray disc, DVD and a CD with a bonus collectors 45 record of the grammy nominated recording. Hansen said “When this project was brought to me I said YES! I knew this was history in the making and we want to share this with the world and at the same time help kids in Haiti. This is one of the most exciting projects I have been a part of, almost as exciting as talking the late Roy E. Disney into the DVD Business.”

Hansen is known by many worldwide as one of the top technologists who helped create the dvd & blu-ray disc industries. Hansen built the first independent dvd facility in the world and built the first independent blu ray disc manufacturing plant in the world. Susan Maki - music label manager for Blue Star Digital Technologies - said “This box set will have many new advances that will make this one of the most technically advanced collectors series and one of the most unusual ever made.” Hansen will make the technology both backward and forward compatible from the old style 45 single to the latest technology beginning with BD Live and more to make this great leap in forward digital technologies.

Melendrez said, ”The Children of the World Project was created to give children the opportunity to use their talent to help starving brothers and sisters in Africa. Now, 25 years later, I am proud that those precious efforts will be enhanced to positively touch lives of young earthquake victims in Haiti.”

Neal commented that "this event 25 years ago changed my life, we helped many kids in Africa and now we get to help many children in Haiti.”

The Children of the World kids, now adults, will reunite on Feb 26th at the Sheraton Delfina Hotel in Santa Monica to do special interviews for this collector’s box set. Many of todays hot stars will also be interviewed to share what WE ARE THE WORLD means to them, and those interviews will be included in the collectors edition, these stars of today will also see the original children of the world video and hear the kids version fo WE ARE THE WORLD.

Along with Melendrez, Celebrity Actress Silvia Koys co-host the interviews that will happen during the reunion.

The Children Of The World Anniversary Collectors Edition box set will be in stores nationwide and worldwide.

Stars from the original Children of the World Project like Fergie, Drew Barrymore, Kim Fields, Alfonso Riberio, broadway stars Stephanie J Block and Lea Salonga will tape their interviews for this special blu-ray/ dvd.

Media is welcome to cover this special event; the celebrities will be available for interview.

TECH REVIEW: Dragon NaturallySpeaking Version 10; Speech Recognition Software Allows Easy Fast Dictation

Review by Bruce Braunstein (Tech Editor)

After decades of trying, and millions of man-hours of frustration, they finally got it right. Nuance Corporation has got the nuance down. The "Holy Grail" has been achieved -- speech recognition finally works the way it was supposed to! The software that does it: Dragon NaturallySpeaking Version 10.

For decades I have been futzing around with various versions of speech recognition programs. I tried IBM's Via Voice. I tried earlier versions of Dragon. Each time I have given up in frustration. But finally, version 10 works the way you want it to.

I'm using the product right now to write this review, sitting at my desk talking to it as I would talk to a person. The text is coming out almost perfectly. Of course, some editing is required, but the editing is easy and almost painless. You can go back, highlight words and correct them. Not only that, they've improved the speed of the program as well. Now, words appear on the screen almost as soon as you speak them.

The preferred edition allows you to use a Bluetooth headset so you can walk around the room and dictate. Also, you can dictate into a wave or MP3 recorder. These files can be uploaded to the computer. Dragon will analyze the files and type them up for you. The productivity benefit of this product is enormous.

The hardest part in writing is getting the first draft down. Now, getting your first draft down can be fun. The thought and care that went into the program will really make your life easier. As a writer, no longer can you use writers block as an excuse. With Dragon you can simply talk out your ideas.

As a writer I find the most important thing is to get your ideas down quickly, then edit them later. If you confuse the editorial and the creative processes you will get writers block. This can stymie you. Using a program like NaturallySpeaking takes you one step closer to getting the work on paper. It removes a level of frustration. You don't have to worry about spelling. You don't have to worry about typing. You don't have to worry about the technical difficulties of writing. You just need to concentrate on the content.

One of the features I like most is the program's ability to sense when a sentence is over, and automatically insert a period and a capitol letter at the beginning of the next sentence. Little details like that make the program easy to use.

After you dictate it's important that you go back and reread your work carefully. Even though words are correctly spelled sometimes, a similar word can be substituted for the one you meant to use. Sometimes sentences are not broken at the correct spot. And sometimes your words just need to be rewritten. In short, you have to be careful editing your work later. It's much easier to go back, edit and review than it is to type it up in the first place.

Dragon's latest version works seamlessly with Microsoft Word. You can use all the features of the program with ease.

Here are some suggestions for future versions of the program. I would really like to be able to save a wav file or MP3 file from what I say to the computer. The program should have a recorder feature that lets me export and save the .WAV or .MP3 file. As an alternative, you can record your text into an audio editor such as Audacity, export it as a wav file, then process the text in batch mode.

Another suggestion: a kids training program for reading text, so pre-teen children could use this program to help with their homework. Voice recognition software could be a help or a handicap. It would be like having a calculator when they are doing math. It would be a great tool for students — provided they learn how to write by hand as well.

A third suggestion: screenplay formatting macros built into the program, for automatically formatting dialogue and action by voice.

Finally, I think the next version should update the DragonPad word processor that comes with it. It hasn’t been updated in years and could stand a revision. One problem is that if you set a font and then go to a new paragraph, the font you set up is lost and it reverts back to the default. Thus, for any real work, you have to use Microsoft Word. Fortunately, Dragon works flawlessly with Word.

In the end, I'm having a blast with this program. I think it's great. It's something I have looked forward to my whole life, and I think they finally have gotten it together in a great program. Check it out for yourself at http://www.nuance.com/.

Hollywood Celebrates Opening Of Europe’s Greatest New Studio: Raleigh Studios Budapest

Posted by Don Rose

Raleigh Studios Soundstage
Sound Stage at the new Raleigh Studios Budapest

Raleigh Studios, the largest independent studio operator in the United States, commemorated the grand opening of their newest state-of-the-art studio facility in Budapest by bringing the magic of Hungary to Hollywood. The invitation-only gala at Raleigh Studios Hollywood, located on Melrose Avenue, took place on February 18 from 7 p.m. to midnight and was a lively feast for the senses. The exclusive guest-list consisted of top studio executives, celebrities, press and members of the film industry, who were treated to a wonderful assortment of Hungarian food and an eclectic selection of wines, as well as live entertainment, giveaways and a virtual tour of Raleigh Studios Budapest with studio displays. Guests mingled with studio execs representing all aspects of film-making, and everyone learned about and experienced the ground-breaking features that the new studio has to offer.

“We are very excited about this project. It will give producers a chance to experience all the great things Europe has to offer the film making process while giving them the comfort and quality of a “Hollywood Style” studio operation and all the confidence that comes in dealing with a known entity,” said Michael Moore, president of Raleigh Studios.

Raleigh Studios Budapest’s doors will open in April 2010 and the new facility is sure to provide the same excellent standard of service as Raleigh’s other facilities in the United States.

The massive European studio, located less than 20 minutes from all major hotels and downtown Budapest, boasts 9 sound stages, a 45,000 sq. ft super stage, and a 15-acre backlot perfect for outdoor set builds. FotoKem is managing a post production facility on site, complete with film lab, visual effects and digital capabilities. There is full set and location lighting and grip with Hollywood Rentals, transportation, scenic, camera as well as production services and line producing with Raleigh Film. There will be a production training school to help build on Hungary’s existing pool of well experienced film crews.

Raleigh Studios partnered with Origo Film Group in this exciting expansion into Europe. The facility offers administration services for film incentives and tax rebates exclusively in Hungary. Hungary offers a tax credit that covers up to 25% of production costs. The experienced crews, low labor costs and the city’s diverse architecture gives producers an excellent advantage over other countries and traditional European studio facilities.

DOUG FIEGER of The Knack - A Look Back (ABC 7 LA Video)

THE KNACK LIVE 1979 "My Sharona" (Video) - RIP Doug Fieger

We are deeply saddened at the passing of Doug Fieger, leader and lead singer of one of our favorite bands, The Knack. The band was born in Los Angeles circa 1978, rose to fame in the clubs here, and continued to play shows here well into the new millenium. The video below (found semi-randomly on YouTube) captures some of the energy this group created live; it is (as far as I can tell) the closing song of a 1979 NYC live concert; Fieger thanks "New York" after the song, if I am hearing correctly. Enjoy watching... and long live the music of The Knack, one of the great power pop bands of all time, and the closest New Wave ever came to The Beatles. ----Don Rose

FEB 14: RENOIR EXHIBIT OPENS AT LACMA

From the LACMA e-newsletter:

Exhibition | Renoir in the 20th Century

Opens February 14

 | BCAM

Renoir in the 20th Century focuses on the last three decades of Renoir’s career, when, following his rupture with impressionism, he turned to an art that was decorative, classical, and informed by a highly personal interpretation of the Great Tradition. Renoir’s paintings from this period, which have never been studied and shown as such, are often misunderstood as they do not fit comfortably into the history of high modernism. This exhibition is the first one ever mounted by LACMA. Offering an unprecedented look at Renoir through the lens of modernism, the exhibition bridges the divide that exists in many people’s minds between art of the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries.

Tickets: $20 for Renoir; $25 for both Renoir and American Stories: Paintings of Everyday Life, 1765-1915

HOW TO WOW YOUR LOVER For Valentine's Day? Let Dr. Lent Sculpt a New You

by Don Rose

So you are planning a delightful day (and naughty night) for Valentine's Day. Sounds great - but what if you want to do something that goes beyond the usual flowers-dinner routine? Sure, you think to yourself, I look okay, but can I look better for my lover?

Or perhaps you recently broke up and are single for V-Day. If so, self-improvement will surely be on your mind. You want to better your chances with the opposite sex. Well, new advances in technology make today the best time ever to do a little re-do and sculpt a new you! Why not a little nip/tuck to improve your luck?

That's where Dr. Warren Lent, MD, FACS comes in. Dr. Lent is recognized as one of the top board certified plastic surgeons in the United States. Based in Beverly Hills, he specializes in body, breast and facial plastic surgery procedures, and practices advanced techniques for eyelid and facelift surgery. The doctor is committed to making sure each patient he works with makes the life changes they need to feel more confident about their body. He has also traveled the world giving special medical attention to those in need, and just recently came back from Uganda for a unique mission.

We at The LA Report were impressed with his video (see link below); in particular, his selfless work for Operation Smile got our attention, and the Before/After pictures of his patients were truly impressive. With the arrival of Valentine's Day, we are all thinking about how we look and how we can please our partner, so if you are considering a new fresher look for this new decade you should look into this top-rated plastic surgeon.

To learn even more about Dr. Warren Lent and his work, you can read his recently-published newsletter below in which he talks about liposuction, with helpful tips for understanding the different techniques used in today’s practice. You can also watch an informative video about Dr. Lent here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WvSZc-rl8MY. Liposuction: Understanding All Those Confusing Techniques
By Double Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Warren Lent, FACS

“Help me doctor! I keep hearing about all these new and improved liposuction techniques. What does it all mean, and which ones really work?” As a Los Angeles plastic surgeon, I regularly hear these questions from people interested in plastic surgery. All the claims and counter claims make it very difficult for people to understand the truth. Providing clarity on these issues is very important.

Liposuction, also known as Suction Assisted Lipectomy (SAL), is the term used to describe the basic surgical procedure of removing fat cells from the space under the skin. It is done with a hollow metal tube, called a cannula, which is attached to a suction machine.

The Dry Technique is the original method of conducting liposuction. A small incision is made into the skin and the hollow tube is inserted into the area where excess fat will be removed. No other fluid or medicine is placed into the area and this technique is associated with a higher degree of blood loss, which leads to more swelling, bruising and overall risk. In general, except in rare special circumstances, this type of liposuction is no longer performed.

Tumescent Liposuction is the most preferred technique today. The plastic surgeon first places a large volume of saline, usually mixed with a pain killer (Lidocain, which is sometimes inaccurately referred to by the public as Novocain) and a medication that decreases bleeding (dilute Epinephrine) to the area where the procedure is being performed. Several advantages to this technique include diminished postoperative pain, decreased bleeding and bruising and a better aesthetic result. It is believed that the improved cosmetic results are due to the firmness created by the added fluid, which allows the surgeon to actually sculpt the area to the desired shape. This method is still considered the gold standard for liposuction Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction (UAL) is liposuction that adds an ultrasound wave-producing device into the fat. The theory is that the sound waves will dislodge fat cells from their attachment to thicker collagen fibers. This technique may be useful in areas of the body where there are many of these thick fibers, such as the upper abdomen, back and where scar tissue exists. The downside of UAL is that the device has been known to cause skin burns, leave increased wavy irregularities of the skin and may be associated with additional blood loss.

Power-Assisted Liposuction is when a small motor is attached to the cannula to move it in and out. The major advantage to this technique is to the surgeon, who experiences less fatigue, and not to the patient. This technique offers no improvement to the final results.

Laser-Assisted Liposuction adds laser technology to the standard liposuction procedure. It is a two-step method, where, first a thin glass fiber is inserted into the area and the fat is melted in small volumes by the laser energy. The second step requires a standard form of liposuction to remove the liquefied fat and any additional fat cells. This technique is still relatively new, and it is unclear whether the laser truly adds any benefit to the final results. Thus far, reputable studies have shown no major clinical benefit.

External devices such as external ultrasound and skin vacuum rollers or cellulite massage devices have not been shown to have any benefit in eliminating fat from under the skin. Despite various claims to the contrary, they are not alternatives to liposuction.

Injection techniques such as Mesotherapy, injection lipolysis or Lipodissolve claim to be non-surgical alternatives to liposuction. These techniques involve the injection of fat-dissolving chemicals that are supposed to dissolve fat cells. This technique has many unknowns and the results are uncertain, difficult to control and unpredictable. Allergic reaction, skin ulcers, scarring and infections have been known to occur.

The future holds many possibilities for advances in liposuction techniques. The Power Water-Assisted liposuction and improved laser technology may offer viable future improvements in the current methodology for SAL. Only with critical scientific analysis will we know if they offer true clinical advantages.

For questions regarding liposuction, plastic surgery or skin care, contact Dr. Warren Lent, MD, FACS at 310.652.6500 or visit www.mybestplasticsurgeon.com.

NextAid and Make-Up Designory - With Help from DJ Rap, Colette, Samantha James and Eve Falcon -
Launch New Promo Campaign For
MUD Cares Palette of Eye Colors
To Fund Construction & Education for Red Rhino Orphanage Project in Kenya

LOS ANGELES, CA – Believing that everyone deserves a beautiful future, the nation’s leading make-up educational institute, Make-Up Designory (MUD), created the MUD Cares Palette of Eye Colors to benefit NextAid and one of its partners in Africa, the Red Rhino Orphanage Project (RROP). 100% of the sales from the limited-edition four-color eye shadow palette are being generously donated to NextAid to help RROP build a foundation for a better tomorrow. Once the specially commissioned palettes sell out the funds will provide construction of orphans’ homes in a poverty-stricken t own 25 miles southeast of Nairobi, Kenya. Each of these eco-friendly structures will provide long-term shelter, food and medical needs for some of the most vulnerable orphans in the area. NextAid has increased efforts to sell the remaining palettes with the launch of an extensive online promotional campaign with the help of lovely superstars Colette, DJ Rap, Eve Falcon, and Samantha James. To help spread beauty from the inside out, purchase the palette online at http://shop.mudshop.com/mud-cares-palette or MUD retail stores located in Burbank and SoHo.

The MUD Cares Palette, retailing for $25.00, is a quad of eye shadows developed and created by Make-Up Designory. The four colors were hand-selected by members of NextAid to bring out the natural beauty of every skin tone. Stay grounded with Spanish Gold and Dulce de Leche, create a warm glow with Cashmere, or visualize a better world with vibrant Moss. The powders are soft and finely mi lled with just a touch of sheen. The shades work for most skin tones and complexions.

By selling only 1,000 palettes, MUD will raise $25,000 to fund the final construction and initial operations of two homes expected to house 16 children at Red Rhino Orphanage Project. Each of the timber-framed sustainable structures will provide basic necessities including medical supplies for rescued children, children at risk, and orphans in a safe, encouraging and healthy environment. The project also funds the children’s educational pursuits, from elementary school through secondary and university or trade school.

NextAid co-founder and director, Lauren Segal-Avenna explains, “The children Red Rhino Orphanage Project is caring for are some of the saddest cases in the region. These are kids that have absolutely nowhere else to go. These were once babies who were literally left on door steps, trash heaps... totally abandoned.”

In late 2009, f our incredible talents from DJ culture came together for a MUD makeover and photo shoot at MUD’s Burbank studio to help NextAid spread the word to their combined global fan-bases. Los Angeles-based DJs and artists Colette, DJ Rap, Eve Falcon, and Samantha James, all generous supporters of NextAid, freed up their busy schedules and volunteered their time. Look for the NextAid/MUD web-banners featuring the four DJ beauties splashed around the internet this spring. Visit MUD’s blog to see the behind-the-scenes photo shoot at http://www.mudblog.net/blog/make-up_designory_nextaid_building_a_foundation_for_a_better_tomorrow.

About RROP:

The Red Rhino Orphanage Project’s mission is to house and educate some of the most unfortunate children in Kenya, enabling them to become contributing members of society and leaders of the next generation. RROP is committed to providing the children it serves with a sanctuary from the immediate and pressing dangers of li fe, housing, food and medical needs. The orphanage will work in partnership with the surrounding community in ways that foster local commerce and positively impact the environment. The project also funds the children’s educational pursuits, from elementary school through secondary and university or trade school. Additionally, RROP sponsors the locally run rescued baby home Springs of Hope in the nearby town of Machakos. The completion of the homes will allow the overflow of older children from Springs of Hope to move to the newer RROP facilities. For more information on RROP please visit http://www.rrop.org.

About Colette:

With her disarming doe eyes and a heartwarming demeanor, Om Records’ Colette possesses the unmistakable voice of post-millennial house music. Her sweet-but-sultry, classically trained voice highlights any beat that flows behind it, making the former choirgirl-cum-Chicago-house-siren a mainstay in the global dance music scene. In the late 90s, Colette started the SuperJane troupe with fellow Chicagoan DJs Dayhota, Lady D and Heather, paving the way for women seeking equal time behind the decks as their male counterparts. In 2007, Colette released Push, the highly anticipated follow up album to her critically acclaimed Billboard Magazine No. 1 charting debut album Hypnotized. Inspired by her house music upbringing in the birth place of the beat, Push harks back to the days where electro, house, hip hop and freestyle music ruled the airwaves and does something few seem to do these days: create a complete album of hits that will grab anyone with a love for good music. Despite international acclaim, Colette continues to stay grounded in the Windy City with her monthly residency at the Metro/Smart Bar. For more on Colette please visit http://www.djcolette.com.

About DJ Rap:

Over her 15-year career, DJ Rap has moved effortlessly between genres, staking her claim on various styles within the electronic spectrum, while simultaneously pushing the limits of rock and pop. The First Lady of Drum Ê»nʼ Bass and the undisputed Queen of the Turntables, her music has infiltrated club systems and car stereos worldwide, and her numerous forays into video game and motion picture soundtracks have solidified her pedigree as one of dance musicʼs most successful and prolific artists. In February 2010, DJ Rap will release Synthesis (Ministry of Sound), a brand new studio album that weaves together a full compliment of synthetic textures and organic moods, and paints a lucid picture of her journey as a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Also, check out Metasyn, the spankin’ new by-product of DJ Rap and fresh up ‘n’ comer Chemical Hero dishing out a brand new drum&bass sound that is unlike anything this side of the moon. About Eve Falcon:

Anyone watching E! Entertainment Television over the past y ear has no doubt seen internationally renowned DJ, producer and vocalist Eve Falcon heating up the decks on the channel’s “12 Sexiest Hollywood Jobs.” Known for her impeccably programmed DJ sets that transcend genre pigeonholing, Eve Falcon has once again brought her flair for music on a fresh new production with renowned DJ and producer DJ Rap. The result is the banging progressive house tune “Good Times,” a peak time floor-filler with uplifting vocals courtesy of Eve herself. The tune is slated for release on DJ Rap’s Impropa Talent imprint in the coming months. Also, Eve’s newest mix, “Bloom,” continues to raise eyebrows and garner accolades as another flawless audio journey. A perfect example of Eve’s unique signature style and energy, the mix has been described as “…sweet beats and smooth transitions make Falcon's mixes long lived pleasures” - http://www.evefalcon.com.

About Samantha James:

Songwriter and performer Samantha James has spent the past seven years honing her estimable skills as a modern-day singer/songwriter within the dance/electronic/soul genre. Her sultry style, vocal cadences, and international rhythms are largely influenced by such artists as Sade, Basia, Amel Larrieux, Bebel Gilberto and Morcheeba. On her debut album Rise for San Francisco based indie label Om Records, Samantha teamed up with producer and co-writer Sebastian Arocha Morton (ROCAsound) who states, “talented, beautiful, passionate, and dedicated… Samantha James is the real thing - as both recording artist and stage performer. She is a welcome and beautiful new face in the world of dance-electronic music.” The soulful songstress, much to the pleasure of her adoring fans, is in the process of completing her highly-anticipated second album, with the first single due to be released in February - myspace.com/sammyjmusic.
