NEW WORDS: DEVOWELLED, VOWELATING, PREMATURITY, WARFARE STATE

DEVOWELLED

A word with its vowels devoured has been devowelled, as in de-vowelled, or vowels removed. Examples: BRNTWD (Brentwood)., TKTS (tickets). Vanity license plates often exhibit devowelling.

VOWELATING

Exhibiting vowels in a regular, often alternating, pattern. For example, repeating "a"'s, as in Dramarama, jacaranda, banana, Bananarama, Panama, Alabama.

PREMATURITY

Premature maturity. Describes a person, product, service or developing industry that gets lots of premature hype before it has truly matured or achieved great results. Example: virtual reality; it got superhot in the media, peaked, then the hype faded, way before it had really developed very far. Now VR is just starting to get interesting.

WARFARE STATE

From noted progressive author/documentarian Norman Solomon's book "Made Love, Got War: Close Encounters with America's Warfare State" (October 2007). Warfare is the new welfare. All's fare in love and war.
